USEFUL TIP SERIES

COSTING & PRICING

Calculating Direct Costs

Materials

The cost of direct materials, also called raw materials, is the value of the exact amount of materials in a given product. Each required component of the finished product is itemised by weight, measurement or estimated usage in production of the product.

For materials used in very small quantities, such as string to attach a hangtag, it is best to include these material costs in indirect costs rather than trying to calculate the small amounts used.

Labour

Direct labor cost is the appropriate hourly wage multiplied by the total amount of time required to complete production, inspection, packaging and packing of one item.  The hourly wage is calculated at .60 per hour.  Payroll taxes are added as a percentage of the per item labor cost.
