COSTING AND PRICING

CALCULATING INDIRECT COSTS

Indirect costs or overhead expenses are all those other costs of operating a business, incurred regardless of production. Figured on a monthly basis, indirect costs are usually fixed, that is the amount does not change from month to month. For example, rent remains the same for each month.  However, some indirect costs may be semi-variable as the cost will change depending on circumstances such as during periods of increased business, the telephone bill may be higher. The following are typical categories of just some of the basic costs associated with operating a business.

  • Rent
  • Communications
  • Utilities
  • Office Supplies
  • Salaries
  • Professional Services (Accountant, Bookkeeper)
  • Sales and Marketing Material (photography, printing, trade fair participation)
  • Postage & Courier
  • Samples
  • Maintenance, Repairs, Depreciation
  • Insurance and Taxes
